We were delighted to test drive a new cabaret style soirée this Spring, and through lots of work and a great crowd it was a roaring success.
HAG has done large theatrical cabaret-style events before, in fact we have a great reputation for them. More about those in our theatrical zone including our most recent La Nuit d’Hibernation. This event though had more of an underground nightclub vibe, with dance music, a bar and performances were interspersed throughout the evening.
Here are some fantastic photos thanks to photographers Ramucy and Alex Sears. Rolling your cursor over each photo will tell you which photographer took the photo.Â
Steph started of the performances with her 2nd solo aerial act ever. Our Mule Spinner series is a friendly venue to try out new things and this she did. She told the story of a lonely lizard lost in a cold climate who then adventures up the pole in search of vibrant community and delicious heat. Inspired by the song Mexico by MarMalade and the transitions of the second half of life, she used a little clown and some playful pole tricks to draw the audience into her world.
Asia and Maria donned delightfully shiny costumes for a duo lollipop act evoking themes of the Equinox. They made a deliberate study of push and pull, holding each other in tension and anchored in trust. Similarly at Equinox day and night hold each other for a moment. In that fragile balance, there’s something electric.
Next up was Tammy’s energetic spicy piece to Latin music. She brought the party 🙂Â
Brooklyn is our newest member of HAG and this was her inaugural performance with the group – she rocked it with her impressive flexibility on the lollipop.
In this piece she represents the journey of facing internal and external challenges, moving from restraint and struggle toward strength, authenticity and freedom.
Asia took a turn on the silks: she told a moody, shadow-soaked story of emerging from the sleeping, heavy winter into spring. She took inspiration from a pagan spring equinox ritual. A time of the year where action and magic rise with equal night, equal day, everywhere on the planet.
Next up we had a hoop choreography by Maria. Her hoop piece was about letting go, releasing the old and the power of change.
Red Nell, a burlesque cigarette seller character from East London also joined us at the end (shown below in a red hat). She engaged folks with riddles rolled up disguised as cigarettes. She was so convincing that someone taking a smoke-break outside stopped her before she entered asking whether she had a ticket to the event 🙂Â
It could be said that the real fun started for us after our acts were over and we each took a turn improvising on the lollipop with the guests who stayed late.Â
